What is a parenting plan?

A parenting plan is a written agreement between the child’s parents for arrangements that will be place after your divorce or separation. In a parenting plan it includes details such as parenting style, living arrangements, education, finances, health care, emotional wellbeing and religion.

A written parenting plan will help to ensure agreements between parents stay in place for the care of your children. It is designed to help schedule new living arrangements between separated parents.

​What are the benefits of a parenting plan?

A parenting plan is beneficial as it provides more clarity and certainty in parenting arrangements. It avoids confusion and clearly outlines the expectations and responsibilities for each parent.

How do I obtain a parenting plan?

The plan can be created through the cooperation and agreement of both parents or with the assistance of a family lawyer. You should ensure that your plan is practical and simple. A parenting plan must be in writing, dated and signed by both parents. You are able to change your parenting plan at any time, but it must be signed and dated again.

Do I need to go to court?

​A parenting plan does not require you to go to court.

This plan is created through the cooperation and agreement of both parties, with the best interests of the child/ren at mind.

A parenting plan is different to a consent order and is not legally enforceable.
